Why Trust My Garage?
By David Poole - Director at Autolube.
For some time I have been looking into the myriad of car garage approval schemes that seem to have sprung up in the last year or so. These schemes have appeared as a direct response from the car servicing and repair industry to the very bad press it has been receiving of late.
Lots of people remember such things as the Which report which randomly tested many independent car garages, and found them to be woefully lacking in quality, service and clarity of prices.
At Autolube we have always done things slightly differently. For the last 10 years or so, we have operated to ISO9001 procedures. This is an international quality standard. Unfortunately only a minority of our customers have heard of, or understand ISO9001, so we found ourselves joining many of the quality control schemes such as The Good Garage, Autosafe and Motor Industry Code of Practice as they appeared.
However, I have recently reviewed what each one stands for, how good it is and how relevant it is to our customers needs. My conclusion has been to drop all of them except one - The new Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) quality assurance scheme, Trust my Garage. This scheme not only operates a very strict quality control policy, it also carries out 'mystery shopper' checks and perhaps most importantly gives an independent guarantee on its members work. This means if car servicing or repair is found to be inadequate, Trust My Garage will pay to put things right themselves!
For these reasons, I feel it's the only scheme that has any 'teeth' to ensure its members comply to the letter of the standard - which we at Autolube take very seriously.
